Celebrating International Prosthetics and Orthotics Day

International Prosthetics and Orthotics Day, held each year on November 5th, emphasizes the vital role that prosthetic and orthotic (P&O) services play in enabling people with physical impairments to lead fulfilling lives. Established by the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO), this day raises awareness about the accessibility and availability of high-quality P&O services worldwide.

The goal is to highlight the need for equitable access to P&O solutions, essential for mobility and participation in everyday activities, work, and social life. Prosthetics and orthotics support an estimated 0.5% of the global population and have the potential to unlock social and economic benefits, reduce healthcare costs, and empower individuals to overcome physical challenges.

ISPO's "5P" model—covering People-centered services, Policy, Personnel, Products, and Provision—emphasizes a holistic approach to P&O services. By addressing these interconnected components, countries can build systems that are inclusive, sustainable, and beneficial to society as a whole.

The day is also a reminder of the challenges that remain. With increasing demand due to aging populations and chronic health conditions, global attention on expanding P&O services is critical. Observing this day allows the global community to rally around the commitment to lifelong mobility and inclusion for all.
